There’s a story in the Old Testament about the prophet Elijah and the widow of Zarephath. A Gentile widow lives in a land undergoing a drought. She and her only son have just enough flour and oil left for one last  meal before facing starvation. At the town gate, she encounters Elijah, who asks her for water and a loaf of bread—everything she has left—in exchange for a promise: “…the jar of flour will not be emptied, and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.”

She obeys the command of the Lord and receives the fulfillment of the promise. Her flour and oil never run out. It is her obedience to the word of the Lord, despite a thousand reasons to be fearful, that makes this a beautiful story of God’s promise and provision when preceded by obedience.

But there is a second half to her story. Later in the same chapter, her son falls ill and dies. The jar of flour and jug of oil are still full, but now her heart is empty. Her grief erupts in anger and accusation, yet when Elijah says, “Give me your son,” she obeys again and entrusts her dead son to him. Elijah cries out to the Lord, and the Lord restores the boy’s life. Elijah returns him saying, “See, your son is alive.” The widow declares, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth” (1 Kings 17:24).

Like most of us, even after a profound encounter with the Lord’s mercy, healing, or even a miracle, we still find it hard to trust Him when faced with suffering that surpasses our past experiences. This is the rhythm of the spiritual life. God often asks for our “last loaf” or our “greatest treasure”—not to impoverish us, but to reveal Himself as faithful. Obedience to God’s Word does not remove hardship. It reveals who God truly is within it. When we surrender our pain in obedience rather than resist it in fear, our pain becomes a place of encounter. The Word of the Lord is truth. And when we obey that Word — even when it costs us everything — we discover that obedience is not loss, but the doorway to life.

The world hates waiting. We feel it in traffic jams, in waiting rooms, in the long line at busy restaurants when we’re hungry and tired. We feel it when the weather refuses to cooperate with our plans, or when our latest diet or workout program isn’t delivering results as fast as the influencers promised. We live in a culture that worships instant gratification and treats waiting as wasted time.

But the Christian life tells a different story.

In Christ, waiting is not passive resignation or white knuckles and gritted teeth. It is Spirit-filled faithfulness—a leaning into the Lord with trust, repentance, and expectation. The world waits with frustration; the Christian waits with hope. Because in the Kingdom of God, waiting is not empty. Waiting has a purpose.

When God asks you to wait, it becomes the daily battleground where the Holy Spirit strengthens you to rise again. Every morning you choose hope over despair, trust over fear, surrender over control. You wage war—not by your strength but by the power of the Holy Spirit within you. When God asks us to wait, one of two movements rise inside:

1.        You either cling to Him in love, or

2.        you cling to the desired outcome in fear.

Here is the good news: after repentance and belief, those who are asked to wait find that all waiting—every longing, ache, and unanswered prayer—draws your heart towards the final promise in Scripture.

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth… He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.” (Rev 21:1–4)

Your pain is real, but it is not eternal. God’s goodness is. Hold onto hope not because circumstances change, but because God cannot be unfaithful. When the Holy Spirit is at work in you, waiting is never passive—it is powerful.

I was recently in Texas with my wife and three kids visiting my family. While we were there, we decided to tour a local cave system. You’ve heard the saying that everything is bigger in Texas, and this cave was no exception.

The tour guide led us on an hour-long adventure through the cave system that took us one hundred and eighty feet underground. When we were as deep as we would go that day, the guide assured us that we would be safe as he led us into complete darkness. It was a darkness so thick that you couldn’t see your own hand in front of your face. In the absence of light, you have no sense of your surroundings. Your brain can’t tell whether you’re in a narrow tunnel or a vast cavern, whether you’re near danger or safely on the path. It was disorienting to say the least.

Then, with one push of a button, the lights flooded the room, revealing soaring ceilings, elegant stone archways, and breathtaking formations. The internal shift I experienced in that moment was fascinating. Just seconds before, I had been disoriented and uneasy in total darkness—yet the beauty had been there all along. I simply couldn’t see it until the light came on.

St. Paul prays for this very kind of spiritual illumination for the Church. In the first chapter of Ephesians, he writes:

[T]he God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, . . . give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power in us who believe, according to the working of his great might. (Eph 1:17–19)

The cave tour guide had promised we would be safe. Yet once we were in total darkness, it was easy to become disoriented and lose sight of that promise and of the beauty waiting just beyond the discomfort.

The Word of God is like the light in that cave: it doesn’t create beauty—it reveals it. God knows how easily we as humans forget his promises when confronted with darkness and uncertainty, so He sent his only Son, Jesus, to reveal his light to the world. Through the Holy Spirit, He inspired the apostles to record divine revelation in the Scriptures so that the light of his truth might flood the caverns of our hearts and minds. In that light, his beauty is revealed. And we, like those first believers, are invited to stand in awe at the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe.

Every now and then, it’s worth stepping back from the constant hum of life—all the to-do lists, the notifications, the endless responsibilities. If you’ve done this recently, you know the feeling: like a stick drifting down a river, letting the current carry you. You’re moving, yes, but are you moving with intention? Not always.

If you don’t have a regular rhythm of silence and stillness, you may have stumbled upon it by accident—on a quiet hike in the woods, floating on a tube on the water, or camping under the stars. In these moments, the noise fades and we come face-to-face with the truth of who we are. For some, this is refreshing. For some, it can be uncomfortable at first. Sometimes the rush and distraction of life feel safer than the quiet, yet the quiet is where transformation begins.

Jesus calls us to “be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt 5:48). That sounds impossible until we remember the ancient invitation: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Ps 46:10). We can’t become who we’re meant to be unless we learn to stop, listen, and remember who God is—and who we are in Him.

For me, stillness often starts with little reminders—a note scribbled in a journal, a highlighted sentence in a book. Lately, I’ve been coming back to these words from Titus 3:5: “He saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit.”

That’s the beauty of grace: it doesn’t wait for us to have life neatly in order before it begins its work. It meets us right where we are—in our reluctance, our restlessness, even our weariness—and gently turns us back toward the heart of God. The same Spirit who hovered over the waters at creation now hovers over the quiet places of our lives, ready to breathe new life. And when we pause long enough to notice, we realize something beautiful: the river isn’t carrying us aimlessly anymore. It’s carrying us steadily toward the One who is both our source and our destination.

Jesus said, “The truth will set you free” (Jn 8:32), but that’s not just an abstract or theological truth—it’s the truth about you: your worth, your wounds, and your need for healing.

The problem is, we’re often formed more by the world’s wounds than by God’s Word. Many suffer in silence under emotional manipulation or spiritual confusion, not realizing they’ve internalized voices that were never from God. The world has formed us through pain and lies, and the enemy mimics God’s voice just enough to distort it. “Not all thoughts that enter your mind are your own,” writes Fr. Jacques Philippe. Many of the voices that stir anxiety and confusion aren’t from God, but we mistake them as truth.

We live in a world of noise—internal and external. Our hearts echo with the voices of others, our past, and the Enemy. These must be distinguished from the voice of the Lord, which always brings peace, never chaos.

Discernment is essential. Prayer is vital. But sometimes God also sends people—trusted counselors, spiritual directors, and friends—to help us see clearly again. These guides don’t replace God’s voice—they help us hear it.

Over time, as we silence the noise, clarity returns, and we begin to hear once again the voice that matters most:

“You are mine. I have called you by name—not the names others gave you, but the one I wrote in my heart. You are wounded, but I AM your healer. You are weary, but I AM your rest.”

May the eternal Word of the Father be the truth that silences every lie and leads you into freedom.
